IN BRIEF: Managing the high risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients is a challenge for practicing clinicians. Reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease in diabetes should begin with assessment and treatment of elevated LDL cholesterol. Statins are the preferred treatment, and intensive statin therapy may be necessary to meet the current goal of < class="bibrecord-passage-highlight-user">diabetes can substantially affect long-term health outcomes.
